iFixit is looking for an entry-level CAD designer/drafter to join our Product Development team. This full-time position will work directly with our Product and Quality Engineers and will play a major role in the development and lifecycle support of all of iFixit’s custom-designed DIY and professional repair tools. While no professional experience is required, the ideal candidate will have 2+ years experience with 3D CAD modeling software, in academic, hobbyist, or professional settings, with a supporting portfolio of sample work.

  • Generate 3D models and 2D technical drawings based on concepts and design requirements from Product Engineers.
  • Revision existing 3D models and 2D drawings based on direction from Product and Quality Engineers.
  • Actively contribute to the design and development of new products through collaboration with the rest of the Product Development team.
  • Utilize product lifecycle management software to revision design documentation.
  • Work within and maintain the organization of our CAD file database.

  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Be receptive to and learn from constructive criticism and feedback.
  • Estimate workload and time required for assigned projects, and work to meet deadlines.
  • Make the most of your time at work by prioritizing and striving for maximum impact.
  • Continually work toward process and personal improvement.
  • Identify and effectively communicate issues that may impede project completion.

  • Associates degree or higher in CAD or Engineering discipline.
  • At least two years experience (professional, academic, or hobbyist) with 3D modeling and 2D technical drawings. iFixit operates on Autodesk Inventor, so experience specific to Inventor will be a plus, but we’ll train the right candidate who has had experience with other comparable software.
  • Working knowledge of dimensioning and drafting standards.
  • Must be proficient with Google Sheets and Docs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with or knowledge of injection molding and CNC machining a plus.

This position is fully remote and open to anyone currently legally able to work in the United States. As our home office is located in San Luis Obispo, California, there may be meetings and work scheduling requirements based on Pacific Standard Time. Once COVID restrictions allow it, this position will have the option (but not requirement) of working in our San Luis Obispo office full-time, or as a hybrid of in-office and remote hours.
