iFixit is hiring a leader to take our editorial team to the next level.

We’re looking for someone experienced in the world of technology journalism, who can help us turn our deep dive “gadget guts” content and Right to Repair policy work into headline-making news.

Your job: To coordinate our editorial team, which consists of video editors, on-screen teardown experts, and repair policy advocates. We’ve got technical and policy-making muscle, but we need you to help point our screwdrivers and keyboards in the right direction. There’s no shortage of exciting new tech to take apart or repair stories to tell, so you’ll help us figure out where to invest our time.

You’ll also help us develop a new press strategy and build out our press list. We’ve been fairly successful at creating news and letting journalists come to us, but we know that with a proactive strategy we could be having more of an impact and getting far more coverage. We could get in more gift guides. We could get coverage of our content that hasn’t yet been well-promoted, such as home appliances and clothing repair. We’ve succeeded in passing Right to Repair laws around the world, thanks in part to our editorial rabble rousing—but we need help seizing the next moment for a world-changing editorial.

You’re a great writer (duh). You can polish rough prose until it shines, ferret out the hottest parts of a hot take, and pare it all down into the most-clickable headline. Our team will help get you acclimated to our voice, but we know you’ll have some ideas for how to keep it fresh. You’ll give (and receive) lots of feedback on video scripts, teardowns, blog posts, op-eds, and press releases. We’re exploring the AI revolution as a company, and you’ll help us brainstorm out new ways to use AI tools as a speed boost for our editorial pipeline without sacrificing the intuition and raw writing chops that have put us on the map.

You should have managed a team before and be ready to jump in. We’ve got a calendar, but we’ll expect you’ll be shaking it up soon. Currently, our team is based primarily in San Luis Obispo, California. We're also setting up a new hub in Chattanooga, TN with a video studio and photo team. Either location works for this role. We love flexible working environments, but this role is fairly hands-on with hardware in our labs.

Above all, we’re looking for someone dynamic, inspiring, and full of ideas for us. Do you have an idea for a killer iFixit TikTok series? A strategy for mobilizing repair professionals around the world? Bring us something we haven’t even considered. Help us bring repair to the world.

About iFixit

iFixit is the largest online repair resource, teaching millions of people every month how to believe in themselves and repair things they didn’t know they could. Our step-by-step repair manuals and troubleshooting forums have set the gold-standard for online repair documentation. We also make the best darn precision repair tools in the world. Our resources, tools, and fix kits have helped people in every country in the world repair their own devices

Our staff is small, but we’re the vanguard of a global community that is redefining people’s relationship with their stuff. We teach normal people how to fix the things they own—from the simple (like busted seams) to the complicated (like smart watches). We do it because we believe that repair empowers people to take control of their hardware, teaches them what’s going on inside their gadgets, and encourages them to keep things in use and out of the landfill.

Job Responsibilities

  • Organize a team of engineers, writers, video hosts, repair advocates, and social media gurus to produce repair content that grabs attention across the internet.
  • Run an editorial calendar that’s strict enough to keep all our channels fresh but flexible enough to give us room to jump on important breaking tech and repair news.
  • Create relationships with journalists covering our key issues, as well as maintain and nurture the relationships we already have.
  • Maintain and develop iFixit’s brand voice. Ensure that all public communication is in line with our voice and reflects our perspective.
  • Work to promote the growing right to repair movement by providing editorial aid, partnership opportunities, and campaign ideas to fellow repair advocates.
  • Manage our many editorial projects, making sure our content gets published in a timely manner and overseeing publication processes and workflows.

As the ideal candidate, you should…

  • Have at least five years of editorial experience, ideally managing both written and video content.
  • Enjoy tinkering and fixing! You probably have a toolbox at home or in your car, and while you love having the right tool for the job, you've made-do on more than one occasion.
  • Follow tech news, keep up with all the new consumer electronics, and know the top manufacturers. We’re looking for someone who has a lot of opinions about tech—and isn’t afraid to call out the industry when it needs to do better.
  • Be open to giving and receiving a lot of constructive feedback. We write collaboratively, so we need someone who works (and writes!) well with others. If you’re territorial about your work, you’re probably gonna get really annoyed with us really quickly.

Bonus points if you…

  • Have experience with Asana, WordPress, Strapi, or BuzzStream.
  • Have run or hosted a YouTube, Snapchat, or TikTok channel.
